Do musicians’ earplugs actually work?
The single best-supported piece of equipment on this site, and the one most often left at home.
What the evidence actually shows
Attenuation performance is well characterised, and studies in music venues and among musicians find reduced temporary threshold shift and reduced tinnitus after exposure when they are worn. [1]
This is about as settled as questions in this field get: consistent findings across multiple trials or a synthesis that pools them. Remaining disagreement is usually about size and applicability rather than about whether the effect is real.
The catch
Real-world attenuation is usually below the laboratory figure because of fit. Custom moulds close much of that gap, and foam plugs cut the highs enough to make monitoring genuinely harder.
