How loud is too loud for a DJ set?
Risk depends on level and duration together, and the exchange rate is steep enough to be counter-intuitive.
What the evidence actually shows
Occupational exposure frameworks are built on an established dose relationship in which a modest increase in level requires a large reduction in permissible duration to hold risk constant. [1]
This is about as settled as questions in this field get: consistent findings across multiple trials or a synthesis that pools them. Remaining disagreement is usually about size and applicability rather than about whether the effect is real.
The catch
A DJ booth is frequently louder than the dancefloor, and a set is longer than most people estimate. Both errors run in the same direction.
